Elecnor short-listed for the future California high speed rail infrastructure project
Elecnor has been short-listed for the project entailing the electrification of the San Francisco-San Jose stretch

21 October 2014.- Elecnor has been short-listed to take part in the Caltrain Modernization Program, involving the commuter rail service in California between San Francisco and San Jose. This is an ambitious project worth nearly USD 1.23 billion (approximately EUR 970 million) and scheduled to be implemented by 2019.   

Specifically, Elecnor, in a joint venture with Cobra, has been short-listed for the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP), a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program. The PCEP consists of the installation of new electrical infrastructure and the replacement of existing diesel-hauled trains with Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains for commuter services between the Fourth and King Street Station in San Francisco and the Tamien Station in San José. This new system will be prepared for future use as high-speed rail (HSR) infrastructure.  

The Caltrain Modernization Program aims to provide a response to increased ridership and ridership demand over the last decade. It will considerably upgrade the performance of the commuter rail service, with a more efficient, faster and reliable service. The project will improve system performance with the installation of electric trains. It will lower costs (mainly fuel), while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise, thereby minimising environmental impact and improving air quality. 

This marks the second time Elecnor has been included on the short-list of candidates for a railway project in California after another infrastructure tender, in July.  

The Caltrain Electrification Project boosts Elecnor's international presence in the infrastructure/railway sector, where it has over 20 years' experience in "turnkey" projects featuring electrification, signalling, interlocking, communications and control systems projects. 

Elecnor also helped develop Spain's HSR network; of the country's 2,700 kilometres of high-speed track, it was involved in laying approximately 2,250 kilometres. 

The company is currently working on a 12.6 kilometre tram contract in Algeria, awarded by the country's Ministry of Transport in June last year.
