Today, Elecnor Deimos will take part in 'Asteroid Day 2016'
A global initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of asteroids and the efforts being made by the scientific community to prevent future strikes on our planet.On the night of 30 June, the company will stream asteroid observation, tracking and surveillance activities.
Madrid, 30 June 2016.- Elecnor Deimos, Elecnor's technology area, will take part in international "Asteroid Day", a global movement to raise awareness about the dangers of asteroids and the efforts being made by the scientific community to prevent future strikes. The event is held on 30 June each year to mark the strike that occurred on 30 June 1908 when an asteroid approximately 37 metres wide penetrated the earth's atmosphere and hit the Siberian region of Tunguska, releasing energy the equivalent to around 185 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima.
Elecnor Deimos is joining this initiative that has the support of international partners such as the European Space Agency, the Association of Space Explorers, Discovery Science and Astronomers Without Borders, by holding an asteroid observation, tracking and surveillance event at 10.15 pm on 30 June at its headquarters in Puertollano (Ciudad Real). The activity will streamed and can be watched by Elecnor Deimos employees in other company offices (in Spain and overseas) and by the general public.
“We are streaming this event to bring space closer to anyone who is interested anywhere in the world and to share this special night with us, during which we will learn some interesting facts about asteroid observation and surveillance", explained Jaime Nomen of Elecnor Deimos.
To observe the skies, Elecnor Deimos will provide a livestream from the control centre of its DEIMOS Sky Survey (DeSS) complex, located in Puertollano and equipped with the latest technology for the observation, tracking, cataloguing and surveillance of asteroids that are close to the Earth and "space junk".
This centre is able to monitor, collect data and analyse the risks relating to the objects observed.
